Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2009-10)

Upon completion of the 2nd year literature course students should be able to: 1. Consider a work of literature as a reflection of its cultural milieu and compare that milieu with his or her own. 2. Examine a work of literature from various vantage points. 3. Examine and analyse the various elements of a literary work. 4. Use basic concepts and terminology particular to literary analysis. 5. Recognise major themes in a work of literature, explore their implications, and identify their basic assumptions. 6. Analyse structure: understand how form contributes to meaning. 7. Appreciate the artistry of literary work and become better acquainted with writers and artists. 8. Recognise the need for literary evidence to support opinions and ideas regarding literary work. 9. Express opinions and responses to literature clearly and effectively in writing.

Classes teòriques i pràctiques

Lectures, class notes, photocopied material and specific bibliography will serve as reference material. Some of the sessions will be devoted to the discussions of the novels, short stories or any text of interest for the course. Students are expected to attend classes and to arrive no later than the appointed time. Attention will be given to the main literary forms with allusion to such topics as language, evolution and gender politics. 1. Treballs bibliogràfics

Syllabus 1. How to write a bibliography in literary studies (MLA and CHICAGO STYLE MANUAL). 2. How to use a database in literary studies. 3. How to study a novel (think about the text; analyse the text; relate the part you have studied to the text as a whole). 4. What does it mean? The dark territory of critical discourse. 5. How to read a text of literary criticism. Material and working sheets will be provided by the lecturers and published on the Campus Virtual. 4. METHODOLOGY There will be one-hour group meetings weekly for lectures, discussions and debates (See timesheet for dates and working sheets). As this is a practical course, attendance is compulsory.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2009-10)

Examen final

There wiil be one written exam (in February and/or June) covering the material explored during the course. The exam will consist of two parts: 1) Identification of fragments (4 marks). It is compulsory to get at least 2.0 points (20% of the final mark) in this section to get a pass and sit for the second part of the exam. 2) Guided commentary on the authors and works we have studied in class (3 theoretical questions. 5 marks (50% of the exam). 3) "Trabajo de literature": 2 marks (20% of the final mark). Students must obtain at least 5,0 points in each exam in order to get a pass. Clear and correct writing will always be expected regardless of the language students decide to use in the exam; poorly written work will never pass, regardless of content. THERE ARE NO RESIT EXAMS. Please note that if a student sits for any of the partials , s/he will not appear as no presentado in the final marks. If you want a no presentado do not sit for any of the two partials. Evaluación "Trabajo de Literatura Inglesa II": 1 point - ATTENDANCE; 0.50 points - ORAL PRESENTATION (IN ENGLISH); 0.50 points - BIBLIOGRAPHIC SHEET. The oral presentation (Power point) will consist of a list of five bibliographical sources on a given subject. The list of possible subjects will be given by the lecturer and/or negotiated with the students according to their interests. Student will have to explain: a. why s/he has chosen that specific subject b. the process of selection of databases and the bibliographical search c. the reason why those specific texts have been selected.
