Aims: To read a representative cross-section of American literature, with special emphasis on 19th and 20th century texts To obtain a deeper understanding of the United States of America through its texts To develop informed analysis of literary works, both orally and in written form

The course will include the following topics: 1st. Term: The Puritans. The literature of the revolution. American gothic. Slave narratives.Transcendentalism. The turn of the century. 2nd Term: The literature of the First World War and its aftermath. American drama in the XX century. The civil rights movement and the questioning of the canon. Clases teóricas y prácticas

The teaching/learning process will be developed through class work and independent study. Class work will take the form of lectures providing background information for authors and texts, and seminar-style sessions, which will be devoted to the issues raised during the lectures and to the discussion of the set texts. Independent study will involve reading for the course and preparing exercises for the discussions. Students are expected to engage actively in the learning process, reading the set works of literature for the lessons dedicated to those texts, and contributing with their own ideas to the class-room discussion. Assigned texts must be brought to class at the appointed dates.

In addition, a number of "practical sessions" have been scheduled during the first term, where students will engage in complementary activities, such as watching documentaries on American culture, history and literature, writing exercises, or reading and discussing selected readings.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2009-10)

Evaluación continua, examen final

1) Participation in class (20%). Criteria: frequency and quality of contribution to the class-room discussions (both in the seminar-style sessions and in the sessions marked as "prácticas"). 2) Written examination (80%). Criteria: In-depth knowledge of the set texts and analytical and interpretative skills. Students will have to demonstrate first-hand knowledge of set works, giving direct proof that they have read them. The mere reproduction of the notes taken in the class-room will not be accepted as evidence of competence. Format of exam: -A section checking that students have read and understood the required reading. A minimum of 50% of correct answers must be obtained in this section as a requisite for the second section of the exam to be considered. -Essay-Questions: A combination of knowledge of set reading, theoretical background provided in the lectures, bibliography and personal critical judgment. There will be an exam at the end of the first term and another exam for the second part of the course. Students may sit for the two exams or, alternatively, take the final exam in June. But please note that both options are mutually exclusive. Please note that if a student sits for any course section, s/he will NOT appear as no presentado. If you want a No Presentado, do not sit for any section. Students whose global mark in June is inferior to 5 should sit for the 2 sections in the September exam.
