Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2015-16)
The general purpose of this course is twofold. Firstly, we shall try to provide students with the range of vocabulary and grammatical structures which will enable them to master Legal English as a specific sub-dialect of English, thus making it possible for them to understand, translate and produce legal texts and documents. Also, it is our aim to make students acquainted with legal structures and proceedings in English-speaking countries, focusing especially on England and Wales, on the one hand, and the United States, on the other.
For practical reasons, it is suggested that students have at least a level of English equivalent to the Cambridge Advanced Examination (C1 according to CEF levels).

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2015-16)
Third or fourth year students of English Studies will attend four hours of Legal English a week during the first term. In these sessions, Legal English will be taught like any other foreign language, with grammar, vocabulary, reading, translation of texts and documents (mainly from English into Spanish), though legal texts and documents in English will also be produced.
Also, in order to provide students with a background on Law, the following areas will be covered:
Unit I: The Law.
Unit II: The English Legal System.
Unit III: Criminal proceedings.
Unit IV: Civil proceedings.
Unit V: The translation of Legal English into Spanish.
Unit VI: Contracts of sale.
Unit VII: Leases.
Unit VIII: Employment contracts.
Unit IX: Proceedings before foreign courts.
Unit X: Community Law.

Metodologia docent (2015-16)
Classes teòriques i pràctiques
The sessions of this course will include both theory and practice. Apart from the textbook, ALCARAZ VARÓ, E. (2002): El inglés jurídico. Textos y documentos. Barcelona: Ariel Derecho, students will be provided with further reference material, in English and in Spanish, covering aspects of Law concerning both Spain and English-speaking countries, for the sake of comparison between the systems. Since the textbook is self-explanatory, students are requested to read the units in advance at home, so that the actual lesson time can be devoted to discussion, analysis and more practical aspects. Practice, i.e., classwork, will be primarily devoted to translation, with the emphasis falling on guided translation into Spanish of unadapted texts and documents in English. Students will be provided with vocabulary exercises as well as language-in-use exercises in order to reinforce their knowledge of the main vocabulary items and characteristics of Legal English. The lecturer will introduce the text or document, drawing attention, where appropriate, to features that are particularly significant or representative, or which require particular care in translating. These texts will usually be assigned to the students to be prepared at home, and their versions, together with possible alternatives, will be discussed in the classroom. Clearly, therefore, students will be required to participate actively in classwork at all times. Also, students will periodically hand in written exercises, and their progress will be assessed partly on this basis. These exercises will be discussed in practical sessions.

Tipus d'activitats: teòriques i pràctiques
Treballs bibliogràfics
The practical sessions sessions will be devoted to:
- translation both from and into English;
- comments on legal news of the week, from a linguistic point of view, i.e., how Spanish journalists translate some concepts belonging to the English and the American legal systems;
- any other aspect of Legal English or of the English or American Legal Systems students may be interested in discussing.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2015-16)
Avaluació contínua, examen final
Apart from the foregoing, the course will be assessed in a three-hour exam, which will be held in February. It will have four sections:
i. A test on the theoretical aspects of the areas covered in class (25%);
ii. A reading comprehension exercise dealing with a text or document where Legal English is used (20%);
iii. A vocabulary test based on classwork (10%);
iv. Translation:
* a passage for translation taken from one of the texts or documents dealt with in class (15%);
* an unseen English text or document for translation from English (20%).
* an unseen English text or document for translation into English (Dictionaries may be used for this section) (10%).
Averages will not be taken unless a student has scored a minimum of 3 in each section (on a scale of zero to ten).
In the assessment of translation, the following criteria will be applied:
1. Comprehension of the sense of the original (on a phrase-by-phrase or sentence-by-sentence basis). 2. Syntactic arrangement of the proposed version (including, where appropriate, subordination and punctuation).
3. Appropriateness and accuracy in the use of technical terminology.
4. Stylistic fidelity (tone, register, accuracy and variety of linking words, etc).
5. Justified use of modulation. Note: Spelling mistakes, especially in Spanish (and including misuse of accents), will be regarded as serious and heavily penalised.
