Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2009-10)

I. AIMS This is an upper-intermediate course of English designed for people training for the Tourism industry. It introduces key grammar and functional language, vocabulary and communication skills and reviews, and expands those already practised in the intermediate course. a) General objectives: - To consolidate the knowledge acquired in English I for Tourism. - To develop the student´s ability to communicate in English, using the four main skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking). - To develop the student´s knowledge of Tourism in English. - To develop the student´s confidence in English. b) Specific objectives: - To make students use their grammar knowledge in the field of tourism. - To make students use the four main skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) in different areas of the tourism industry.

II. TEACHING METHODOLOGY There will be four-hour sessions per week. The classes will consist of: - Language focus activities - Task-based activities in which students will have to put into practice their knowledge of tourism and their reading, listening and speaking skills.

- Class sessions: students will discuss the topics included in units and sections selected from the student`s book and practise, in pairs and groups, the activities included in these units and sections, as well as in materials prepared by the teacher. - Private revision work: students will have to do regular revision work at home with 1) their workbook ;2) grammar and vocabulary points posted on the "Campus Virtual; 3) exercises given by the teacher. - The cassettes accompanying the student`s book are available for practice both in the General Library and in the Language Laboratory.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2009-10)

Examen final

Students will be assessed by a multiple-choice test composed of reading, listening, vocabulary and grammar questions (8 points) + Writing (2 points). An oral exam, which is optional but highly recommended, can be based on either a role-play situation or an oral exposition (maximum 0,5 point added to the average mark obtained in the multiple choice test and Writing). The oral exams will be held from the beginning of May 2010 till the end of the academic course 2009-2010. In order to get a pass, students must obtain an average of 5 points out of 10. Students are encouraged to participate actively in class, which will be taken into account for the final mark in a positive way.
