Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2013-14)
The course is designed for learners who have already consolidated an upper intermediate level of English and completed INGLES COMUNICATIVO I, set at Level B2 of the Council of Europe`s Common European Framework for modern languages. The course is intended to complement the skills covered in INGLES COMUNICATIVO I. It intends to offer students the ability to deal confidently with a range of spoken communications and to expand their vocabulary, in order to construct suitable arguments and use appropriate communication styles for a variety of situations. Students will also need to show awareness of register and of the conventions of politeness and degrees of formality as they are expressed through language.


Contenidos teóricos y prácticos (2013-14)
Progress in Listening skills: understanding of gist and specific details: Note taking and sentence completion, multiple choice and matching, dialogues, monologues, telephone conversation, radio programmes, announcements.
Development of Conversation skills: focus on accuracy and fluency. Giving information, points of view, participating in discussions, making polite interruptions, apologising and making and responding to suggestions.
Pronunciation is integrated throughout the course to help students become more fluent by focusing on phonological aspects of spoken English.
Expansion of vocabulary: lexical exercises practising and activating essential vocabulary related to selected topics including lexical fields, collocations, word families, fixed phrases, phrasal verbs and idioms.
Reading comprehension (Extracts, multiple matching exercises, gapped texts, multiple choice questions) through a variety of authentic stimulating reading texts. Focus on sub skills such as skimming and scanning.
Certain grammar points are revised throughout the course to develop the students' knowledge and to gain a sense of progression. These points include: simple and continuous aspects; activity and state verbs, present perfect , the passive, quantifiers, describing future events; modal verbs.
Complementary writing tasks: formal and informal letters, emails, reports, reviews, a discursive article.

Metodología docente (2013-14)
Clases teóricas y prácticas
The course is based on the communicative approach, and focuses mainly on listening and speaking skills in social situations as well as vocabulary and grammar.

The classroom approach will be essentially practical. Students will be requested to participate actively in the class sessions. Lectures will alternate with workshops and discussion sessions focusing on Speaking, Listening, Vocabulary and Pronunciation. Most Reading and Writing skills as well as Grammar practice will be carried out at home. Students will be requested to use the Cambridge Face 2 Face Upper Intermediate course book for both class work and home practise.

Involvement and active participation in class activities will also be required and students will be asked to carry out set tasks and to complete a series of activities outside the class as part of course work.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2013-14)
Evaluación continua, examen final
Assessment will be based on a written essay evaluating different skill areas:
Writing (based on writing tasks carried out during the course -approximately 180 words), Reading (Students are expected to show understanding of detail, meaning and text structure of extracts from books, journals, newspapers and magazines) and Use of English (Vocabulary and Grammar: Students must demonstrate their knowledge and control of the language system by completing various tasks at text and sentence level; these include filling gaps, transforming words and identifying errors in texts).
Oral skills will be evaluated by testing the learner`s ability to listen and understand the meaning of spoken English, and to extract gist and meaning from spoken text.
To pass students must obtain at least 50 % in each paper.
