Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2009-10)
-To give the students a grounding in the theoretical and practical aspects of phonology and phonetics.
-To give them a complete description of English phonemes and the phonological processes in connected speech.
-To help students transcribe texts phonemically and offer them an introduction to phonetic transcription.
-To help the students master the pronunciation of English and help them understand isolated words and connected speech.
-To help students overcome problems involving the acquisition of English pronunciation.
-Teach students to find the correct resources to acquire a good pronunciation.


Contenidos teóricos y prácticos (2009-10)
-Phonology in the study of the English language.
-Standard Pronunciation.
-The Characteristics of Received Pronunciation.
-Phonetics and phonology: basic concepts.
-Acoustic phonetics, articulatory phonetics and auditory phonetics.
-Introduction to the articulation of vowels and diphthongs; the consonants.
-Basic phonological concepts.
-English vowels and diphthongs.
-Connected speech: assimilation, elision, juncture.
-Description and classification of English consonants.
-Introduction to accent, rhythm and intonation in English.
-Comparison with Spanish phonological system.


To be able grasp both the theory and practice for this course, it is expected that students work using the LMS thoroughly and systematically.

Metodología docente (2009-10)
Clases teóricas y prácticas
Students in this course will meet for at least two hours per week and will also have to do the exercises designed for them in the LMS (Learning Management System), Moodle. Lectures based on theory will be given in the lecture hall and in the LMS, and as for the lectures based on practice, students are expected to work during class time, on their own in the LMS, in the computer room (when available), in the library on campus, in any public library with internet connection or at home. Students are expected to participate actively in both the theoretical classes, the practice classes and in the LMS.

Regular exercises will be uploaded to the LMS on the following topics:

-Phonetic transcription.
-Pronunciation of difficult words.
-Practice on stress, rhythm and intonation.
-Sending of audio feeds for evaluation.
-Odd one out: pronunciation of similar words, homophones.
-Weak and strong forms.
-Word stress .v. sentence stress.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2009-10)
Evaluación continua, examen final
Assessment will be an ongoing process taking into account class participation and practice done in the LMS.
Marks will be distributed in the following way:
1. Continuous assessment taking into account class participation and the exercises done in the LMS Moodle, 20%.
2. Oral test: Reading (Teacher Man by Frank McCourt). Especial emphasis will be placed on pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation, 20%.
3. A written examination: phonological transcription, 20%; render phonologically transcribed words or whole sentences into English, 20%; various exercises on pronunciation, stress, rhythm and intonation, 20%.
In order to be assessed students must pass both the oral and written tests.
