Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2015-16)
To promote active use of the English language in engineering situations through a variety of written and oral tasks designed to enhance students` ability to communicate effectively.
To develop theoretical and practical knowledge of linguistic issues(Grammar and Vocabulary) common in technical English
To develop the skill of reading for information in English to be able to apply in extensive reading on Engineering issues
To develop the skill of listening to information in English on technical aspects
To build up the student`s vocabulary and mastery of idiomatic English.


Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2015-16)

CONTENTS:
The grammar, vocabulary and writing contents will be those included in the textbook, Infotech: English for computer users, 4th ed., Cambridge University Press, 2008.
Sección 1: Some Basics of English for Science
Sección 2: Computer Architecture
Sección 3: Peripherals
Sección 4: Storage devices
Sección 5: Basic Software
Sección 6: Faces of the Internet
Sección 7: Creative Software
Sección 8: Computers tomorrow
Extra listening and reading practice will be provided by the lecturer in the LMS. These listening comprehension and reading exercises will deal with the above topics.
Oral presentations will be also tackled as a practical tool.

Metodologia docent (2015-16)

Students will have one textbook (Infotech: English for computer users 4th edition, Cambridge University Press) which will be used as a guide for grammar presentation, reading material, listening, exercises and writing assignments. Additional material on specific topics will be provided by the lecturer in the LMS (Learning Management System).

Internet using the LMS (Learning Management System).
Students are expected to do a reasonable amount of preparation (including the writing assignments) so that the knowledge acquired can be appreciated in more practical activities. Communication activities will provide an opportunity for students to interact in pairs or groups using language in a freer, more creative way. As part of the course and in order to develop listening and reading comprehension skills, students will be required to spend time working with listening comprehension exercises, reading texts and videos, etc., inserted in the LMS. Follow-up activities (comprehension and summing-up exercises, essays, etc.) will be provided and the completed activities will be handed in, recorded, or sent by email, etc., using this new learning management system (LMS) called Moodle. All the assignments, exercises, essays, etc., will have to be completed before the end of the course. Students in this course are required to do a lot of reading, writing and listening. Reading English books, newspaper articles, magazines, watching documentaries, British or American series and news programmes will be some of the activities which students will have to do on their own in order to meet the desired level (B1).

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2015-16)
Avaluació contínua, examen final

Assessment will be an ongoing process taking into account the tests and the grades obtained in the LMS. There will only be one final exam at the end of the course, covering all four language skills.
Marks will be worked out in the following way: Assignments and exercises in the LMS, 20%; Project (15%); Listening test (10%); Written test, 55% which will consist of two parts: a) Multiple Choice Test (40%), and b) Extended (60%).

Projects: The projects will be presented individually one week before any of the exams proposed for the course takes place. All the students taking this course will meet together in a room specifically arraged for the activity. Students are advised to contact their lecturer in time for further information.

Students must pass the Written test in order to be assessed.
