Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2016-17)

This course aims to enable students to: 1. Acquire the necessary skills for effective oral communication in a variety of contexts of academic and professional nature. 2. Show ways to find writing as well as reading in the sciences an increasingly enjoyable pursuit. That is, develop motivation to improve their writing and reading strategies. 3. Enhance their ability to understand people talking about different issues realted to science and technology. Develop listening strategies. 4. Develop techniques to understand and apply syntactic structures common in scientific discourse and improve strategies to technical and general vocabulary.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2016-17)

The course will cover aspects related to oral presentations skills, such as organizing your material, creating more impact and using visual aids among other issues to analyse, understand and apply knowledge to create effective oral communication projects. In the practical part of the course, time will be assigned to complete listening, reading and writing activities leading to producing effective oral communication.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2016-17)

Avaluació contínua, examen final

Assessment will take into account tests and the grades obtained in the LMS. There will only be one final exam at the end of the course, covering all four language skills. Marks will be worked out in the following way: Oral Presentations, 25% Assignments and exercises in the LMS, 15%; Written test, 45% (Reading Comprehension, 20%; writing (summaries and essays) 15%; grammar and vocabulary -use of English- 10%). Listening Comprehension Test, 15%. Students are required to deliver a presentation one week before the final exam takes place.
