Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2013-14)

Inglés III para Informática is an optional course. It is the third and last in the series of courses devoted to English for Specific Purposes in the Polythecnic School of the University of Alicante the Department of English offers for the undergraduate degree studies in Computer Science. There are six credits of which 1.5 are asigned to theory and 4.5 to practice. This course aims to enable students to: 1. Acquire the necessary skills for effective oral communication in a variety of contexts of academic and professional nature. 2. Show ways to find writing as well as reading in the sciences an increasingly enjoyable pursuit. That is, develop motivation to improve their writing and reading strategies. 3. Enhance their ability to understand people talking about different issues realted to science and technology. Develop listening strategies. 4. Develop techniques to understand and apply syntactic structures common in scientific discourse and improve strategies to technical and general vocabulary.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2013-14)

The course will cover aspects related to oral presentations skills, such as organizing your material, creating more impact and using visual aids among other issues to analyse, understand and apply knowledge to create effective oral communication projects. In the practical part of the course, time will be assigned to complete listening, reading and writing activities leading to producing effective oral communication.

Metodologia docent (2013-14)

Classes teòriques i pràctiques

Students are expected to do a reasonable amount of preparation at home (including the writing assignments) so that class time may be dedicated to consolidation of the knowledge acquired and more practical activities. Communication activities will provide an opportunity for students to interact in pairs or groups using language in a freer, more creative way. As part of the course work and in order to develop listening and reading comprehension skills, students will be required to spend time working with listening comprehension exercises, reading texts and videos, etc., inserted in the LMS or downloaded from the Internet in the lab sessions. Follow-up activities (comprehension and summing-up exercises, essays, etc.) will be provided and the completed activities will be handed in, recorded, or sent by email, etc., using this new learning management system (LMS) called Moodle. Students in this course are required to do a lot of reading, writing and listening to improve their oral production.

Laboratoris

Laboratory hours for 1 hour a week where listening skills will be practised and oral presentations done in due time, and the Internet using the LMS (Learning Management System) for activities to be done at their own pace and time..

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2013-14)

Avaluació contínua, examen final

Assessment will be an ongoing process taking into account class participation, tests and the grades obtained in the LMS. There will only be one final exam at the end of the course, covering all four language skills. Marks will be worked out in the following way: Oral Presentations, 25% Assignments and exercises in the LMS, 15%; Written test, 45% (Reading Comprehension, 20%; writing (summaries and essays) 15%; grammar and vocabulary -use of English- 10%). Listening Comprehension Test, 15%. Students must pass the Written test in order to be assessed.
