Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2013-14)

To promote active use of the English language in engineering situations through a variety of written and oral tasks designed to enhance students` ability to communicate effectively through writing. To develop theoretical and practical knowledge of linguistic issues(Grammar and Vocabulary) common in technical English. To develop the skill of writing in English on Engineering issues. To develop the skill of listening to information in English on technical aspects. To build up the student`s vocabulary and mastery of idiomatic English. To promote autonomy for learning a foreign language. To develop an intermediate level (level B1 of the Common European Framework) in the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing modern technical English. To enhance the student´s ability to communicate effectively.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2013-14)

CONTENTS The grammar, vocabulary and writing contents will be those included in the textbook, Oxford English for Information Technology. Extra listening and reading practice will be provided by the lecturer in the LMS. These listening comprehension and reading exercises will deal with the following topics: Peripherals. Operating Systems. Networks and the World Wide Web. Communication systems and computing support. Programming. Software Engineering. Future trends and computer-related issues. Some extra grammatical notions to help in the production of paragraphs: Sentence Combining: Coordination and Subordination. Punctuation. Verb-Subject Agreement. Consistency in Tense, Person, Number, and Tone. Patterns of Organization. Paragraph Writing: Development of argumentative or expositive paragraphs following four different models: example, comparison, contrast and definition.

Classes teòriques i pràctiques

SYLLABUS This course will meet for four hours per week in the second semester. Students will have one textbook (Oxford English for Information Technology, 2nd ed., Oxford University Press) which will be used for grammar presentation, reading material, listening, exercises and writing assignments. Additional material on specific topics will be provided by the lecturer in the class sessions and in the LMS (Learning Management System).

Internet using the LMS (Learning Management System). METHODOLOGY: Students are expected to do a reasonable amount of preparation at home (including the writing assignments) so that class time may be dedicated to consolidation of the knowledge acquired and more practical activities. Communication activities will provide an opportunity for students to interact in pairs or groups using language in a freer, more creative way. As part of the course work and in order to develop listening and reading comprehension skills, students will be required to spend time working with listening comprehension exercises, reading texts and videos, etc., inserted in the LMS. Follow-up activities (comprehension and summing-up exercises, essays, etc.) will be provided and the completed activities will be handed in, recorded, or sent by email, etc., using this new learning management system (LMS) called Moodle. All the assignments, exercises, essays, etc., will have to be completed before the end of May. Students in this course are required to do a lot of reading, writing and listening. Reading English books, newspaper articles, magazines, watching English speaking films, documentaries, British or American series and news programmes will be some of the activities which students will have to do on their own in order to meet the desired level (B1).

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2013-14)

Avaluació contínua, examen final

Evaluación continua, examen final Assessment will be an ongoing process taking into account class participation, tests and the grades obtained in the LMS. There will only be one final exam in June, covering all four language skills. Marks will be worked out in the following way: Assignments and exercises in the LMS, 20%; Written test, 65% (Reading Comprehension, 20%; writing (summaries and essays) 20%; grammar and vocabulary -use of English- 25%). Listening Comprehension Test, 15%. Students must pass the Written test in order to be assessed.
