Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2009-10)

The aim of this subject is twofold. On the one hand, we shall cover all aspects of Legal English and English-Spanish legal translations which have not been previously dealt with in other subjects, i.e.) translation of legal documents and translation of texts concerning US law, both into and from the students` native language. Thus, at the end of the year, successful students will be in a position to act as certified interpreters as required by Spanish Law.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2009-10)

Examen final

As a result of the division of the subject in two sections, the assessment process will have two parts: BLOCK 1: Translation of legal documents. (50%) Students will translate a number of texts from English into Spanish and from Spanish into English, with and without dictionaries. BLOCK 2: American Law. (50%) This part will be assessed by means of a written exam, with short and/or multiple choice questions and texts from translation from English into Spanish, with and without dictionaries. Averaging will only be carried out if a minimum of 5 out of 10 marks is obtained in each part. Alternatively, those parts failed may be taken again in September. Because of the nature and purpose of legal documents, only four content errors or omissions will be allowed in each document. The same will apply to gross grammatical mistakes. Texts can be either known or unknown.
