Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2009-10)

The translator who would like to specialize in Screen Translation will necessarily have to acquire basic training in the semiotics which result from the blending of both audio and visual channels. It will be essential, therefore, to learn to schematically describe translation priorities in any given segment, whether it is fiction, documentary, advertising or even theatre and opera surtitling. By the end of the semester the students of this subject will have achieved the necessary skills to produce the script of a synchronized cinematic translation in its main forms: dubbing, subtitling and voice-over for the screen and translation for theatre adaptations. They will also have the basic technical knowledge to record it adequately on the source films using free software available for them both at our university laboratory and via internet through our multimedia platform.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2009-10)

Unit 1.- Introduction to Screen Translation: Research models based on specific restrictions and priorities. Unit 2.- Theatre Translation: strategies to achieve performability and transfer rhetorical figures. Unit 3.- Translation for subtitling: Typographic conventions, strategies for condensation and segmentation.. Unit 4.- Translation for dubbing: Conventions of script coding. Unit 5.- Translation for dubbing: Isochrony, lip synchrony and kinesics. Unit 6.- Screen translation: iconography, shots and editing. Unit 7.- Screen translation: expectations and priorities based on film typology. Unit 8.- Assessment of screen translation.

Metodologia docent (2009-10)

Classes pràctiques

All the teaching will take place in the language laboratory, where students will be using the necessary software and equipment to translate and then to transfer subtitles and dubbing to the audiovisual segments they will be working on. The results will be played on the laboratory`s big screen in order to compare and comment on the different strategies applied. Students will also be able to download audiovisual segments and free software from home in order to perform the tasks set by the teacher and then forward the files with theatre translation, subtitles or dubbing voices via web to the multimedia platform.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2009-10)

Avaluació contínua, examen final

By the end of the semester, the students will have to supply the following work:: - Translation of a short segment of a theatre play by November 17th. (15% of the final mark) - Subtitling of a short segment of a film by December 1st. (20%) - Dubbing production of a short segment of a film, by December 18th.(25%) - Essay on the professional dubbing of a commercialised film by December 22nd. (40%) Those students who have successfully performed these tasks will have passed the subject. Those who have performed below standards in any of the tasks will have a second chance with the specific task in the final exam in January.
