Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2013-14)

The general purpose of this course is: (a) the consolidation of the knowledge acquired in the study of English during the first year of Translation Studies. (b) the development of the mastery of the English language according to the linguistic components and the skills that will be dealt with during the year. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a level of competence similar to that of the Cambridge Proficiency examination.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2013-14)

Second year students of Translation Studies will attend four hours of English per week. There will be one two-hour group meeting with Dr. Víctor M. Pina (which is described in a separate programme) plus two two-hour groups with Prof. José Ramón Calvo Ferrer The course is divided into a grammar and vocabulary section and the second section deals with reading, listening, writing and oral skills.

In the two hour sessions, students will be assigned readings (articles, excerpts, etc), vocabulary exercises and listenings. Students will have to do listenings in the language lab (10 hours).

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2013-14)

As for the set reading books (to be assigned) students will have to do an oral interview on one of the books any time during the year. During the interview, students shall engage in normal conversation and comment on aspects referring to the reading text in question. Students will be asked to present an assigned topic orally in groups. Attendance to these classes is considered obligatory therefore students who do not attend these classes will have to sit an exam (oral and written) based on the content of the presentations. Students will also have to prepare a song translation from English into Spanish. The songs will be assigned and the student will have to explain the difficulties of the translation in an oral interview with both Prof. Pina and Prof. Calvo. As for the writing part, there will be two composition exams: one in February and another one in June.
