Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2009-10)

- To maximise students´ language skills in order to ensure that they have the level of English language competence (ADVANCED) necessary for training in translation and interpreting. Students whose entry level is low will have to make an extra effort to achieve the required level of proficiency. - To perfect students´ knowledge of the nuances of English grammar at an advanced level. - To familiarize students with the lexicon of specialized fields such as politics, medicine, law, bussiness, nature, art, literature. - To get students familiar with a wide range of text types and genres. - To improve students´ pronunciation and develop their knowledge in phonetics. - To introduce, practice and reinforce techniques for advanced level writing in different genres. - To improve students´ listening comprehension skills, exposing them to different registers and accents. - To promote active use of the English language through a variety of oral and written tasks designed to enhance students´ ability to communicate effectively.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2009-10)

This course is aimed to to maximise the students' language skills in order to ensure that they have the level of English language competence (ADVANCED) necessary for training in translation and interpreting Class materials - Grammar: Lesson plans and other materials will be posted gradually on Campus Virtual. Recommended grammar and vocabulary texbooks listed in CV (Bibliography). - Writing: Students should have a copy of John Eastman and Víctor Pina's, Write Right , Aguaclara. Other materials will be distributed by teacher. - Phonetics: Photocopies will be distributed by teacher. Recommended texts: Enrique Alcaraz Varó, Fonética Inglesa para Españoles, Marfil. Antonio Lillo. Transcribing English: The Nuts and Bolts of Phonemic Transcription. Comares. Dictionaries: a) Monolingual: Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary, Collins; Oxford Dictionary of English, OUP; Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Longman; Oxford Advanced Learners´ Dictionary of Current English, OUP; Longman Language Activator, Longman b) Bilingual: Diccionario Oxford inglés-español, español-inglés, OUP; Diccionario Moderno español-inglés/ English-Spanish, Larousse; The Collins English-Spanish/Spanish-English Dictionary, Collins. Class materials - Grammar: The teacher will post a dossier of units gradually on Campus Virtual, which students must download and bring to class on the appointed dates. A self-study pack of activities and listening exercises will be available at the photocopy room of Geografía e Historia at the beginning of the semester. Grammar and vocabulary texbooks and manuals are listed in the Bibliography section of the program in Campus Virtual. All titles are available at the Biblioteca General for students to check out. Metodologia docent (2009-10)

Classes teòriques i pràctiques

Class will meet four hours a week each semester. The whole class will meet on Tuesdays (1st semester), and Wednesdays (2nd semester), but on Fridays, the class will be divided up in two groups. Group shifting is forbidden. Class-time will be devoted to the following skill-development areas: - Grammar, Vocabulary, Listening and Reading Comprehension (Prof Lourdes López, Tuesdays 1Q /Wednesdays 2Q) - Writing, Speaking, Phonetics and Pronunciation improvement (Prof. Vicenta Alemany, Fridays)

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2009-10)

Avaluació contínua, examen final

- GRAMMAR, VOCABULARY, READING AND LISTENING COMPREHENSION (40%). Tasks (reading and listening comprehension, multiple choice tasks, rewriting, short translations) and written exam. By the end of the second semester (June) students will have spent 20 hours in the language laboratory working on listening and pronunciation activities. Lab attendance will be checked electronically by teachers. - WRITING (30%) . Students will be asked to write at least one composition during the semester and sit a writing exam in June. - SPEAKING (20%) Tasks and oral interview if performance is below average. - PHONETICS (10%) Tasks and written exam. Please note that grades will be saved until December only. Involvement in class activities is compulsory.
