Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2014-15)
Students taking English as Lengua C in the Translation and Interpreting Programme are expected to have already achieved an intermediate level in both written and oral English. The aims of Lengua C: Inglés during this third year will be:
(A) the development of the mastery of the English Language in all four language skill areas to be dealt with during this year;
(B) the enhancement of active use of the English Language through a variety of oral and written tasks designed to improve the students` ability to communicate;
(C) the acquisition of translation skills.


Contenidos teóricos y prácticos (2014-15)
GRAMMAR: The following grammar items will be specifically analysed:
- Verb tenses : active and passive
- Modal verbs
- Verb patterns
- Discourse markers
- Linking devices
- Relative clauses
- Conditional sentences
- Hypothetical meanings

VOCABULARY: Vocabulary will include the topics dealt with in the textbook, as well as a variety of sources (textbook, short stories, recordings) from which students will draw out and group the vocabulary. They are supposed to learn it at home in order to be able to use it orally in the classroom and for written assignments based on specific topics.

WRITING: Special attention will be paid to writing techniques. The correction of grammar mistakes will be essential, but also the proper use of punctuation, register, development and transition in any piece of written work. Assignments will be set on different sorts of written language, such as narration, description, letters, etc. Special exercises based on self-correction skills will also be supplied.


LISTENING COMPREHENSION: Students' listening comprehension skills will be developed through their exposure to a wide range of audio-visual material as well as oral presentations in the classroom.

READING COMPREHENSION: Students will be expected to read passages taken from the textbook and other sources, such as the short stories included in the New Headway Advanced Student's Pack. More specific material, such as journalistic articles on specialized topics, will be supplied by the lecturers.

TRANSLATION: Real material taken from newspapers, magazines and other sources will be used to develop this skill in the classroom through group and individual work.

ORAL WORK: Students will be required to make oral presentations in the classroom about a list of topics related to the English-speaking world. Special emphasis will be put on issues such as correct grammar, vocabulary, register, and development of topic, as well as pronunciation and fluency.

Metodología docente (2014-15)
Clases teóricas y prácticas
Students of English as Lengua C in the Translation and Interpreting Programme will attend three hours of language a week, one of them theoretical and two practical. There are also further practical sessions during the second term on the last three Wednesdays (group 1) / Mondays (group 2). These hours will include the following:

Linguistic components: Grammar and Vocabulary.
Skills: Writing, Listening, Reading, Speaking and Translating.

Students are required to have a textbook (New Headway Advanced) that will be used in class throughout the year. Additional material and exercises will be supplied by the lecturers.

It is assumed that students will do the required homework. The teaching sessions will be interactive and the students will be required to take part in every activity designed by the lecturers. Students must do the New Headway Advanced Workbook by themselves, including the listenings, which will be uploaded in the virtual laboratory.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2014-15)
Evaluación continua, examen final
Written work will be regularly corrected and marked throughout the academic year. There will be one written exam in December and another one in June, consisting of the following parts:

Grammar (30 % of the mark),
Vocabulary (20 % of the mark),
Reading comprehension (15 % of the mark),
Listening comprehension (10 % of the mark) and
Writing a composition of about 150-180 words on one of two given topics (15 % of the mark).
Oral presentation (10 % of the mark) for those students who have not made their presentation in class.


With respect to the final mark, the following criteria will be applied:

When the mark obtained in one or more parts of the exam is less than 50% of the total mark for that part and the Final Mark is:
- higher than or equal to 6, the June mark will be "APROBADO";
- lower than 6 and higher than or equal to 5, the June mark will be "SUSPENSO", and, therefore, the students will have to re-sit all the parts failed;
- lower than 5, the June mark will be "SUSPENSO" and, therefore, the students will have to re-sit the WHOLE exam again in September
