Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2012-13)
1. AIMS

1.1. By the end of the course, students are expected to have amassed a sufficiently wide technical vocabulary and to have developed, through continual practice and constant exposure to the relevant type of texts and documents, a sufficient awareness of legal principles and stylistic habits to enable them to translate swiftly and accurately representative passages drawn from the fields of law and administration. For convenience, this leading aim may be broken down into the following contributory objectives:

1.1.1. To consolidate and develop the translation skills learned and practised in the third-year introductory course "Traducción jurídico-administrativa español-inglés, inglés-español I";

1.1.2. To deepen and widen students' mastery of legal vocabulary by exposure to a range of specific texts and documents;

1.1.3. To train students to a more sophisticated command of the appropriate stylistic skills in both languages and to increase their knowledge of the distinct legal and administrative practice in the Spanish- and English-speaking countries;

1.1.4. To ensure that the students' linguistic skills and sensitivity to context and register increase through constant practice in specialist translation of texts of reasonable length both into and out of English.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2012-13)
2. CONTENTS

2.1. To ensure the practical usefulness of the course for future translators, the texts chosen will deal with a variety of legal issues (matters of criminal law, civil law, administrative procedure, cases in tort, contract, business law, and so on) and text types (extracts from textbooks, legislation, judgments and law reports). The idea is, as far as possible, to ensure scope as well as depth of knowledge. Though most of the material used will be formal in character, newspaper articles on law matters will also be included to encourage students to notice and deal with stylistic problems and related features (the translation of headlines, variations in register, colloquialism, popular and journalistic quasi-legal jargon, etc).

Metodologia docent (2012-13)
Classes teòriques i pràctiques

3. METHODOLOGY

3.1. The course is designed to cover theory and practice, with the emphasis falling on guided translation of unadapted texts. It will feature texts for translation both from and into English. In addition to the set book, the lecturers will provide material for translation. Before proceding to translation, technical and theoretical issues (terminology, system-specific procedures, nomenclature, etc) will be clarified to ensure full understanding and accuracy in the final version.

3.2. The working norm will be the seminar-cum-workshop. After dealing with the background and with relevant theoretical aspects of one of the areas described in section 2 above, the teacher will introduce the related text, drawing attention, where appropriate, to features that are particularly significant or representative, or which require particular care in translating. Thereafter students will be asked to apply these principles and structures to their translation of the texts. The texts will usually be assigned to the students to be prepared at home, and their versions, together with possible alternatives, will be discussed in class. Clearly, therefore, students will be required to participate actively in classwork at all times.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2012-13)
Examen final
4. ASSESSMENT

The basis of assessment will be a final examination in February, consisting of two parts:

1. Spanish into English (50% of total mark).
a) Vocabulary test based on classwork (10%).
b) Unseen Spanish-English text for translation (40%).
2. English into Spanish (50% of total mark).
a) Vocabulary test based on classwork (10%).
b) Unseen English-Spanish text for translation (40%).

Dictionaries may be used for 1.b) and 2.b). Averages will not be taken unless the student has scored a minimum of 4 in sections 1.b) and 2.b) (on a scale of 0 to 10). Participation in class activities will be taken into account at the teacher's discretion.

In the assessment of translation, the following criteria will be applied:

i) Comprehension of the sense of the original (on a phrase-by-phrase or sentence-by sentence basis);
ii) Syntactic arrangement of the proposed version (including, where appropriate, subordination, coherent adaptation of word order, and punctuation);
iii) Appropriateness and accuracy in the use of technical terminology;
iv) Stylistic fidelity (tone, register, aptness and variety of linking words, etc);
v) Justified use of modulation, expansion, compensation and related tactics of naturalisation.

Spelling mistakes, including misuse of written accents in Spanish, and basic grammatical errors in English will be regarded as serious and heavily penalized.
