GRAMMAR: The following grammar items will be specifically analysed: - Verb tenses : active and passive - Modal verbs - Verb patterns - Discourse markers - Linking devices - Relative clauses - Conditional sentences - Hypothetical meanings
VOCABULARY: Vocabulary will include the topics dealt with in the textbook, as well as a variety of sources (textbook, short stories, recordings) from which students will draw out and group the vocabulary. They are supposed to learn it at home in order to be able to use it orally in the classroom and for written assignments based on specific topics.
WRITING: Special attention will be paid to writing techniques. The correction of grammar mistakes will be essential, but also the proper use of punctuation, register, development and transition in any piece of written work. Assignments will be set on different sorts of written language, such as narration, description, letters, etc. Special exercises based on self-correction skills will also be supplied.
LISTENING COMPREHENSION: Students' listening comprehension skills will be developed through their exposure to a wide range of audio-visual material as well as oral presentations in the classroom.
READING COMPREHENSION: Students will be expected to read passages taken from the textbook and other sources, such as the short stories included in the New Headway Advanced Student's Pack. More specific material, such as journalistic articles on specialized topics, will be supplied by the lecturers.
TRANSLATION: Real material taken from newspapers, magazines and other sources will be used to develop this skill in the classroom through group and individual work.
ORAL WORK: Students will be required to make oral presentations in the classroom about a list of topics related to the English-speaking world. Special emphasis will be put on issues such as correct grammar, vocabulary, register, and development of topic, as well as pronunciation and fluency.
