Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2015-16)

General aim: The general purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the profession of interpreter and prepare them adequately to perform the skills needed to interpret in the consecutive mode. Skills: - Although these theoretical notions will be joined by examples and exercises, parallel activities will be carried out in order to upgrade students´ level of competence in interpreting techniques. - Exercises to develop listening skills will include both traditional activities in which students are asked to listen for general and specific information to demonstrate understanding, and other exercises based on developing good prediction skills in which students will be trained to use context clues and prior knowledge to predict the next information in an utterance. - Public speaking skills will be developed through spontaneous and prepared speech-giving in class and critical comments offered by the professor and students. Examples will be given of effective and non-effective communication. Students will also be required to interpret publicly in the classroom to become comfortable with speaking before a group.

The course comprises the following aspects: 1) Principles of consecutive interpreting · understanding · prior knowledge · stages of the process 2) Active listening · getting the key words · summarizing · processing information by means of cue questions 3) Speech analysis · identification of the speech type · identification of main ideas and hierarchy of secondary elements · interpretation of links 4) Memory · types of memory · short-term activation · the importance of context 5) Note-taking in consecutive interpreting · the importance of note-taking · the principles of note-taking · language of notes 6) Types of preparation for an interpreting situation · in advance / last-minute preparation · aids for the interpreter 7) Re-expressing · effective communicative standards · public speaking skills (eloquence, word-flow, voice, self-control, eye contact, body-language) 8) Other types of interpreting · bilateral · whispered · sight translation
