Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2012-13)

1. Theoretical Part

The main aims are to enable students to:

(i) achieve a firm command of the main grammatical and lexical areas at intermediate level.

(ii) develop proficiency in all four language skill areas (reading, speaking, listening and writing) at intermediate level.

2. Practical part

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

(i) recognise English words and sentences written in phonetic script (using the International Phonetic Alphabet), and transfer words and sentences written in phonetic script into standard written English.

(ii) translate short texts from English into Spanish, and vice versa.

Note: Students taking English as Language C (I) in the Translation and Interpreting degree are expected to have already reached a pre-intermediate level in both written and spoken English.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2012-13)

1. Theoretical Part

The language syllabus contained in New Headway Intermediate (the third edition) will be followed closely, although contents from other sources will also be used.

Photocopies of selected short stories (for the oral interview) will be made available to students.

2. Practical part

(i) Phonetics: With reference to the contents of English Pronunciation in Use, units 1-40, this section will focus on segmental phonemes and spelling equivalences. Exercises will include phonetic transcription of words, minimal pairs and reading from transcriptions.

(ii) Translation: This section will focus on the translation of selected short texts from English into Spanish, including a range of articles taken from the press, and extracts from novels and short stories. Translation practice exercises will address challenging aspects of translation (English-Spanish and Spanish-English), such as structural differences, prepositions and false friends.

Metodologia docent (2012-13)
Classes teòriques i pràctiques

1. Theoretical Part

Students will need to acquire a copy of New Headway Intermediate Student's Book (the third edition), which will be used for class activities and homework. The lecturer will also make use of photocopies, transparencies, audio and video. Class time will be used for language presentations and practice activities as well as skills work, which will be done on an individual, pair, group and collective basis. Students will also be required to prepare activities for class, and do written work and consolidation exercises at home. Weaker students will be encouraged to do extra self-study exercises at home.

2. Practical part

(i) Phonetics: Students will need to acquire a copy of English Pronunciation in Use, which will mainly be used for self-study in the language laboratory. The lecturer will also make use of photocopied material from various sources in order to explain and practise specific contents in class. A minimum of 8 hours attendance and use of the language laboratory will be required from all students. T

(ii) Translation: Photocopies of translation practice exercises and short texts for translation into Spanish will be made available to students at the beginning of the course.
