Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2009-10)

Students will: - Become aware of the richness of the literatures written in English. - Understand the importance of colonialism in the shaping of the English-speaking world. - Be able to connect texts to the postcolonial contexts that produced them. - Develop new reading strategies needed to approach postcolonial texts. - Be able to present information orally to the class. - Engage in critical thinking and writing.

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2009-10)

This course is a basic introduction to the literatures that emerged in the new independent nations of the British Empire and which are concerned with the effects of colonialism on different cultures and societies. Texts produced by authors with immigrant backgrounds in the UK will also be considered. We will cover a wide range of texts from different locations, including the Caribbean, Africa, India, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the UK, among others, with an emphasis on short stories, poems and media. Authors will include Chinua Achebe, Rudyard Kipling, Witi Ihimaera, Patricia Grace, Samuel Selvon, Dionne Brand, Margaret Atwood, James Mcauley, David Malouf, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Eunice de Souza, Jane Campion or Atom Egoyam (film makers), among others. Our readings of these authors will be shaped by such critical terms as colonial discourse, Eurocentrism, othering, ethnicity, multiculturalism, gender, the body, orality, or re-writing. Materials: - A reading dossier will be available at the beginning of the semester for students to photocopy. - Reading questions and other class materials will be posted on Campus Virtual. Students will be responsible for downloading materials and bringing them to class as required.

Classes teòriques i pràctiques

Active learning methodology which promotes interaction and students` involvement in the learning process. Interactive lectures will combine with class discussions and workshops. Students are strongly advised to keep up with the assigned readings in order to participate enthusiastically in class debates and score participation points.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2009-10)

1. Class participation (30 %) Students need to keep up with the assigned readings in order to be able to participate in class discussions and activities (workshops) and score participation points. 2. Exam (30 %) A written exam will assess the students` knowledge of the theoretical contents of the course. 3. Class presentation (40%) It will be based on the reading of a text not included in the syllabus and will engage with key issues pertaining postcolonial liteature. Students are encouraged to do a multimedia presentation in English and give out hadouts to the class. Presentations will be scheduled by the teacher.
