Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2009-10)
- To introduce students to the methods, terminology and main findings of micro-sociolinguistics, a central area of the wider field of sociolinguistics dealing with language use and discourse in social contexts. - To inculcate an appreciation of two basic dimensions of discourse: a) conveying content and describing a reality; b) performing social actions, constructing a reality. - To guide students through selected readings on the subject, and prepare them to design small investigations.

Metodologia docent (2009-10)
Classes teòriques i pràctiques
Theoretical sessions will consist of lectures providing introductory information, following the order indicated in the "contents list" of each unit. Key ideas of lectures are provided in the "class outlines", which should be further elaborated with students´ own notes and the recommended bibliography. Practical sessions will be carried out through seminar-style sessions in which students will read selected articles, discuss them critically with fellow students, and individually prepare a summary of each article. Practical sessions will also include the oral and written discussion of sociolinguistic topics supplied in the "worksheets". Finally, they may also be devoted to student presentations on course-related topics.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2009-10)
Avaluació contínua, examen final
Written exam: It must be passed with mark 5.00 or above. It will cover the content of lectures, practical exercises and required readings. It includes: a) Test with approx. 40 multiple option questions on sociolinguistic topics -basic outlook, concepts, methodology, main findings and relevant examples. 5 points. This part must be passed with 5.00 in order for the part b) (Theoretical-practical) to be corrected and for the whole exam to receive a "pass". (The September and December exams may have a different format, that of 5 questions with brief answers up to 300 words). b) Theoretical practical analysis: Discussion of linguistic data within a particular theoretical framework. Discussion of research articles read during the course. 5 points. This section will only be considered if the test has passed with 5.00 or above. Participation will be considered for the final course mark. The criterion is the quality of students´ contributions to discussions and assigned tasks. Written work (in typing) must be handed in to the lecturer and additionally sent to her through Campus Virtual/Controles by the appointed deadline in order to be accepted. The written exams in June, September and December will be held at the dates arranged by the Faculty, which can be checked on the Faculty web page.
