Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2014-15)
- To introduce students to the various traditions of linguistics applied to the teaching of English as a foreign language;
- To inculcate an understanding of the classroom as a communicative situation;
- To emphasize the importance of using English as means of communication in the EFL classroom;
- To help students relate linguistic, discourse analytic and sociolinguistic concepts to teaching objectives and teaching activities;
- To provide structured information and practice on teaching techniques that enhance pupils communicative skills and expand their syntactic and lexical repertoire;
- To guide students through selected readings on the subject;
- To practice and stress the importance of teaching English THROUGH English.


Contenidos teóricos y prácticos (2014-15)
I. Theoretical syllabus
Module 1: Linguistics and approaches to language teaching
- Unit 1. Linguistics and its applications
- Unit 2. The Audiolingual approach
- Unit 3. Communicative Language Teaching

Module 2: Teaching the linguistic system: Phonology, syntax and lexis
- Unit 4. Phonology and teaching pronunciation
- Unit 5. Syntax and teaching grammar
- Unit 6. Lexis and teaching vocabulary

Module 3: Communicative skills
- Unit 7. The receiver/interpreter in oral communication: Listening
- Unit 8. The receiver/interpreter in written communication: Reading
- Unit 9. The producer in oral communication: Speaking
- Unit 10. The producer in written communication: Writing

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2014-15)
Evaluación continua, examen final
A written exam on both the theoretical and practical part of the subject: 100% of final course mark

There will ONLY be a written exam.

There is NO requirement of handing in a didactic unit.


The written exam will cover the whole of the theoretical and the practical contents of the subject.

Students may check the content of these two parts of the subject in the section "Contenidos teóricos y prácticos". The content covered in the exam includes lectures, content of practical exercises and required readings for both the theoretical and the practical parts of the subject.

The format of the exam will be:

a) a multiple option test with approx. 40 questions on the material covered during the theoretical and practical parts of the subject: concepts, methodology, problems and relevant examples. 50% of mark for exam.

b) A written discussion of basic concepts, methodology , problems and practical examples. 50% of mark for exam. Academic English at the B2/C1 level is required for the written discussion.


ATTENTION: The exams will be held at the dates arranged by the Faculty. Please check the exact dates on the Faculty web page before immatriculation, as no other dates will be made available for individual students who can not be present at the arranged exam date.
