Classes teòriques i pràctiques
THEORETICAL PART
There will be three (14th September-5 March) and then two (8th March-21st May) one-hour group meetings weekly for lectures, discussions and debates. Lectures, class notes, photocopied notes and specific bibliography will serve as reference material. Most explanations by the lecturer will be complemented by reference to texts, i.e. set books and other works and fragments supplied by the lecturer, which the students will have to read closely.
Activities will be also carried out in the form of open discussion, quite often about points, questions, fragments, etc. assigned previously . This means that the students will have to prepare homework and participate actively in the class. All activities will be carried out in English.
Students will attend lessons with a copy of one of the following works or a similar monolingual dictionary: - Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English -Oxford Advanced Learner`s Dictionary of Current English -MacMillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners.

PRACTICAL PART
-Students will have to deliver a talk on a given book.
-When they finish their talk on the book, they will answer questions on five given fims.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2009-10)
No especificat
4.1. THEORETICAL PART
There will be one written examination in January and another one in May, covering the material studied during the term. The exams will be written in English, and linguistic mistakes will bring the mark down. Each exam will consist of four parts:
a) A multiple-choice test on the history of ideas as well as on the trends, authors, works, etc. studied during the term [30% of the mark]
b) Identification and contextualization of fragments [25% of the mark]
c) One question on the issues studied during the term [22`5% of the mark]
d) Commentary: Two questions on a given fragment [22`5% of the mark]
Students will have to answer section 'd', i.e. 'commentary' in order to pass the exam.
Those students who fail or do not take either or both of the written exams will have a second chance in a resit (i.e. a "final" exam) in June.

4.2. PRACTICAL PART
The oral exams will take place between 1st and 21st May. In April the tutor will issue a list indicating the time and date for each student. A second chance will be given before 7th June to those who fail the exam.
Talk on book
In the exam, the student will give a copy of the abstract to the tutor and will then deliver the talk in English for about five to ten minutes. The student will be able to consult notes, but no texts can be read in the exam.
In the assessment the following factors will be taken into account: a) oral expression; b) clarity of exposition; c) organization of ideas; d) originality of ideas; e) insight of analysis; f) relevance of information; and g) relevant illustration and comparison.
Films
After delivering the talk on the chosen work, the student will answer questions on the five given films seen in the Pràctiques classes.

4.3. PASS STANDARD AND FINAL MARK
The pass mark is 5`0.
-The final mark will be calculated as follows:
1st-term written exam (January): 37`5% (of the final mark)
2nd-term written exam (May): 37`5% (of the final mark)
Practical part: 25% (of the final mark)
-Students will have to score the following minimum marks:
1st-term written exam (January) 4`0
2nd-term written exam (May) 4`0
Practical part 4`0
Although the above minimum marks have to be scored in each one of the three exams, students are again reminded that the final mark, calculated according to the percentages indicated, will have to be at least 5`0 in order to pass the subject.
