Metodologia docent (2009-10)
Classes teòriques i pràctiques
III. CONTENTS AND METHODOLOGY:
Students of 'Lengua Inglesa I' will have three lecture periods per week, plus individual work at the language laboratory. In addition to that, students will have one weekly practice session in smaller groups.

PART 1: MORPHOSYNTAX (GRAMMAR & TEXT ANALYSIS).
Set book: Campos, M. A., A. Lillo & V.M. Pina. (2002): Grammar in Gobbets. Alicante: Aguaclara.

In this module students will have a grammar coursebook that will serve as reference material. The first half of this book (lessons 1 to 8) will be dealt with during the first year, and the second half (lessons 9 to 18) will be studied during the second year. Students will be asked to prepare the lessons at a rate of approximately one lesson every two weeks. Difficult aspects or doubts that may arise after reading the explanations in the book will be treated in class, after which the corresponding exercises will be corrected. It is assumed that students will prepare the material at home, since a good proportion of the class time will be devoted to identifying difficulties and solving doubts. As for text analysis, the students will have to analyse texts from a grammatical point of view. Thus, the focus is on morphology and syntax, rather than on semantics. Students will sometimes have to study passages that will be given to them in the class without any chance to prepare them, although on occasion they will be supplied with texts in advance to prepare at home.

PART 2: WRITING SKILLS.
Set book: Eastman, J.K. & V.M. Pina (19992): Write Right. Alicante: Aguaclara.

The writing portion of the class will be devoted to developing a variety of writing techniques and good proofreading skills. Emphasis will be more on correct writing (through the use of Write Right) and error avoidance (see appendix below) than on creativity, which is again left to second year. Students will be required to write a number of out-of-class compositions, corresponding to different sub-genres (narrative, description, argumentation...). Among the subjects covered, there will be compositions on the set reading texts (given by the teacher).

PART 3: USE OF ENGLISH.
Materials provided by the teacher.

The main purpose of this section is to focus on specific grammatical structures and aspects of vocabulary which traditionally have presented special difficulties for students. Students will complete exercises which will then be corrected and reviewed in informal small group sessions with the various teachers. Listening comprehension and reading exercises will also be included in this section of the course.

PART 4: ORAL PRACTICE.

Students will attend one weekly session in small groups where they will employ a variety of spoken language skills which will allow them to use the structures and grammar they are learning in the other parts of the programme. Oral presentations will be an important part of this section of the course.

LABORATORY WORK.
The goals and objectives of this part of the course are to develop students` listening comprehension skills through exposure to taped renditions of English language texts on a variety of topics related to practical usage of the English language in real situations, and to expand students` vocabulary through the study of words and phrases in context. Students will have to make use of the language laboratory, where they will find a number of scheduled practice sessions which they will have to follow. Throughout the course of the year, students must complete a total 15 hours (8 during the 1st semester + 7 during the second semester) of laboratory practice.

IV. ASSESSMENT: The assessment of 'Lengua Inglesa I` will be carried out as follows:

(a) Morphosyntax (Grammar and Text Analysis): (25% of the final mark)
This part will measure the students' progress in the acquisition of formal grammar. There will be a mid-term exam in January and a final exam in June,. The overall mark for this part will be an average of the February and June exams. YOU CAN ADD ALL THE EXPLANATIONS YOU WANT

(b) Writing skills: (25% of the final mark)
-Write Right: There will be a paper for this part in February, which will consist of a multiple-choice test and an error-detection exercise. Students failing or not taking this paper will have to hand in a paper with the exam materials using the Write Right book (No mark: Pass/No pass. Note: a pass is required in order to sit at the Writing exam in June).

-Composition: There will only be a final Writing exam on the last week of the year (around May 20). Students can only sit for the final exam if they have a PASS in the Write Right section.

(c) Use of English: (25% of the final mark)
It will be based on the final exam, although of course, the teacher will take into account the work that students have done during the year. On the test, students will also have sections dealing with reading and listening comprehension.

(d) Oral Practice: (25% of the final mark)
The final mark will result from in-class participation during a variety of oral activities (presentations, debates, etc.). There will be two formal interviews, a generic one (worth 40% of the mark) and another based on the set reading texts used in the writing skills section of the class (60% of the mark).
