Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2013-14)

In this course students will continue to practise the four basic skills, with a special emphasis on written and oral production and syntactical, lexical and phonological accuracy, with the aim of reaching and consolidating the advanced level, that is, the C1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in English. The overall objective is to assist students in improving their communicative competence in different types of communicative events and genres, including media and specialized texts.

Contenidos teóricos y prácticos (2013-14)

6 units comprising activities in the following language and communication areas: Vocabulary, Grammar, Use of English, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Activities will focus on different written and spoken text/discourse types, including newspapers, magazines, journals, fiction and non-fiction books, leaflets, brochures, reports, reviews, proposals, essays, letters, talks and speeches, presentations, everyday conversations, etc. CAE BOOK: Units 1-6 GRAMMAR BOOK: (Advanced Grammar in Use) 1-9; 12, 15-20; 28-31;32-33; 53-55; 79-94; 99-100. Independent study has the aim of practicing the language presented in the coursebook units. Students are expected to do the required vocabulary, use of English and grammar exercises and tasks independently. Also they will be asked to attend the language laboratory for a minimum of 7 hours in order to carry out the listening sections of the coursebook as well as additional pronunciation exercises (advanced pronunciation. manual). Checking and correction will be done in class and through Campus virtual and Moodle.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2013-14)

Evaluación continua, examen final

1. WRITTEN EXAM (80%): There will be one final exam in June, which must be passed minimally with a global mark 4.5 in order to pass the course. The final exam consists of: a) Multiple-choice test of vocabulary, grammar, use of English, listening and reading. This test must be passed with 4,5 (out of 10) as a requisite for the written text to be considered, and for taking the oral exam. ii) Composition: This will only be considered if the test has received 4,5 or above. Texts with 4 or more linguistic errors will receive mark 0. The text or texts must show the conventions, format, vocabulary and syntactic structures practised in the course for the relevant text type. Detailed assessment criteria for the compositions can be downloaded from "materiales". 2. ORAL EXAM (20%). The oral exam will only be taken if the test has received 4.5 or above. It consists of speaking activities of the type practised during the course. Students will be assessed for fluency, ability to interact, use of vocabulary and syntax taught in the course, pronunciation and relevance of content (level C1). Detailed assessment criteria for C1 can be downloaded from "materiales". . The written exams will be held at the dates arranged by the Faculty, which can be checked on the Faculty web page. Dates of oral exams will be announced by the lecturer on the Campus Virtual.
