Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2009-10)

In this course students will continue to practise the four basic skills, with a special emphasis on written and oral production and syntactical, lexical and phonological accuracy, with the aim of reaching and consolidating the advanced level, that is, the C1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in English. The overall objective is to assist students in improving their communicative competence in different types of communicative events and genres, including media and specialized texts.

Contenidos teóricos y prácticos (2009-10)

8 units comprising activities in the following language and communication areas: Vocabulary, Grammar, Use of English, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Activities will focus on different written and spoken text/discourse types, including newspapers, magazines, journals, fiction and non-fiction books, leaflets, brochures, reports, reviews, proposals, essays, letters, talks and speeches, presentations, everyday conversations, etc.

Clases teóricas y prácticas

The teaching/learning process will be developed through class work and independent study. Class work will be based on the required coursebook, organized into 8 units comprising speaking and reading activities promoting purposeful speaking, writing texts of various types on unit-linked topics, listening to audios / watching videos, and revising lexis and grammar systematically. The lecturer may provide complementary photocopiable material where relevant. Attention: Students will not be permitted to change groups.

Independent study has the aim of practicing the language presented in the coursebook units. Students are expected to do the required vocabulary, use of English and grammar exercises and tasks independently. Also they will be asked to attend the language laboratory for a minimum of 7 hours in order to carry out the listening sections of the coursebook as well as additional pronunciation exercises. Checking and correction will be done in class and through Campus virtual.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2009-10)

Evaluación continua, examen final

a)There will be one final exam in June, which must be passed minimally with a global mark 5 in order to pass the course. The final exam consists of: i) Multiple option test of vocabulary, grammar, use of English, listening and reading (60% of exam mark). This test must be passed with 5 (out of 10) as a requisite for the written text (b) to be considered, and for taking the oral exam (c). ii) A written text (25% of exam mark). This will only be considered if the test has received 5 or above. Texts with 4 or more linguistic errors will receive mark 0. The text must show the conventions, format, vocabulary and syntactic structures practised in the course for the relevant text type. iii) Oral exam (15% of exam mark). The oral exam will only be taken if the test has received 5 or above. It consists of speaking activities of the type practised during the course. Students will be assessed for fluency, ability to interact, use of vocabulary and syntax taught in the course, pronunciation and relevance of content. b) Continuous assessment will be carried out as well. This includes: i) Quality of students´ participation in class. ii) Language laboratory sessions (min. 7 hours´ independent study). iii) Written texts (in typing and individual). The printed text must be handed in to the teacher in class within the given deadlines, and additionally sent in through Campus Virtual/Controles, also within the given deadlines. Work handed in and/or submitted late through Campus Virtual/Tutorías will not be accepted. iv) A revised, improved and individual version of these texts must be handed in as a portfolio of written work at the end of the course. The portfolio must also include the first version corrected by the teacher. Plagiarism will lead to the portfolio receiving mark 0. Attention: Students who do not attend a minimum of 80% of class sessions will sit for a longer version of the final exam. Attention: No parts of the June assessment (exam or continuous evaluation) will be considered for subsequent assessments. The proportion of each of these aspects of the course in the final course mark will be: a) Final exam (incl. test, written text and oral): 80% of final course mark. b) Continuous assessment: 20% of final mark The September and December evaluations will be based only on the Portfolio of written work (to be handed in by the announced deadlines, printed and through CampusVirtual/Controles) and the language lab sessions (10% of final mark), and the written and oral exam (90%). The written exams will be held at the dates arranged by the Faculty, which can be checked on the Faculty web page. Dates of oral exams will be announced by the lecturers through Campus Virtual. Students who have been assessed continuously for their oral skills in class will not need to do the oral exam.
