Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2013-14)
To develop theoretical and practical knowledge of linguistic issues(Grammar and Vocabulary) common in technical English
To develop the skill of reading for information in English to be able to apply in extensive reading on Civil Engineering issues
To develop the skill of listening to information in English on technical aspects
To develop the skill of translating into Spanish texts of technical content
To learn how to write sentences effectively.


Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2013-14)
The course is divided into two main parts. They are identified as Section 1: Basics and, section 2: Core. Every two units a longer reading will be provided to perform diverse activities to enhance reading abilities.

Section 1: the Basics
Section 1.1 Numbers and Operations with Numbers;
Section1.2 Describing Objects, Shapes and Dimensions;
Reading Assignment
Section 1.3 Describing Angles, Reading basic and more complex Formulae;
Section 1.4 Describing Position, Movement and Action;
Reading Assignment
Section 1.5 Describing Qualities of Materials; Colours and Appearance.

Section 2: the Core
Section 2.1 Describing technical functions and Applications; Explaining how technology works;
Reading Assignment
Section 2.2 Describing specific materials; Categorising materials
Section 2.3 Describing component shapes and features; Explaining and assessing manufacturing techniques;

METHODOLOGY Students in this course are required to do a lot reading, writing and listening. Reading English essays, watching English speaking documentaries, and news programmes will be some of the activities which students will have to do on their own in order to reach the required level (B1)

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2013-14)
Examen final
As there will be no face-to-face lectures, the following issues will be taken into account for the evaluation of the subject:
Project (15% of the total mark): Students are requested to write one project dealing with a Civil Engineering topic to obtain a maximum of 15% of the final mark. Students are requested to do their oral presentation in public in a room assigned for the purpose one week before the exam takes place.
Moodle (15% of the total mark): Completion of the practical activities on Moodle will provide a maximum of 15% of the total mark.
Exam (70% of the total mark): The course will also provide students with an exam that will account for 70% of the total mark. The exam will consist of questions regarding listening comprehension activities; reading comprehension activities; assorted exercises dealing with grammatical, lexical and conceptual issues of technical nature as well as of general use of the English language.
It may be noted that a minimum mark of 5 is needed to obtain a pass in the subject.
