Objectius de l'assignatura / competències (2009-10)

To be able to communicate fluently and accurately in a variety of nursing situations in oral and written form. To develop listening skills so that students can understand the global sense of short and long messages and look for specific information. To develop reading comprehension skills so as to develop their understanding of short and long texts. To develop pronunciation skills in order to make student's speeches fluent and accurate. To prepare nursing students aiming to join international exchange programmes

Continguts teòrics i pràctics (2009-10)

The contents of the course will be the following: - The hospital team - In and around the hospital - Hospital admission - Accidents and emergencies - Pain - Symptoms - Caring for the elderly - Nutrition and obesity - Blood - Death and dying - Hygiene - Mental health nursing - Monitoring the patient - Medication - Professional CV - Letters, reports and complaints. Each of these units includes reading, listening, writing material and role-play activities about the topics specified before. The revision of Grammar aspects will include the following: - Present tenses - Prepositions of place and movement - Past tenses - Giving instructions - Making comparisons - Question forms - Time and numbers - Future - Should/shouldn't - Zero and First Conditional - Expressing possibility - The Present Perfect and other Perfect tenses - The passive - Talking about obligation

Classes teòriques i pràctiques

This course will be organized in two weekly sessions from October 2009 to January 2010. Students will use the following textbook as their basic source of information and activities. Grice, T. Oxford English for Careers: Nursing 1. Oxford University Press. However, additional material on different topics will be provided by the lecturer, including photocopies and information downloaded from several health sciences websites.

Instruments i criteris d'avaluació (2009-10)

No especificat

There will be a written exam in January that will account for 90 % of the final mark. It will cover the following language skills: reading, listening, writing, vocabulary and grammar. Additional homework activities (projects) will be proposed and evaluated, yielding a maximum of 10% of the final mark. Moreover, involvement and active participation in oral class activities will be taken into account.
