Course context for academic year 2017-18

In environmental management, remote sensing is a source of periodic and updated data, and is the starting point for the development of spatial databases which can later be analyzed and represented by GIS. Satellite images provide information and facilitate the analysis of large areas, and help to detect and quantify spatiotemporal changes that are hardly noticeable by using other tools. Additionally, the RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) or drones complement satellite information, and have quickly adapted a diversity of sensors to develop powerful tools for managing the land at any scale. This advance has been accompanied by improvements in the quality and availability of hardware and software, which is now capable of performing complex analysis in a short time.

  • CE22 : Calculate and manage ecosystem status indicators.
  • CE5 : Acquire the ability to analyse processes, flows and balances in ecosystems.

• Describe the basis and explain the use of remote sensing tools that are commonly used for environmental management.
• To choose the appropriate analysis techniques according to the established objective data and data types.
• Apply remote sensing techniques, acknolwedging their limitations, and knowing how to interpret the results.
• Using geographic information as a management tool.
• Introduced RPAS technology (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) as a tool for environmental management.
