Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2011-12

By means of the study of the topics Chemistry II and Inorganic Chemistry, respectively taught in the second and third semestre of the Chemistry Degree, the student obtained the theoretical foundations of the bonding models used for inorganic compounds and the relationship between them and the solid structures as well as the characteristics of the elements through the Periodic Table. These theoretical concepts, together with another specifics from the actual properties of inorganic solids, taught in this topic, Inorganic Solids, will be used to describe the bonding theories applicables to inorganic solids and justify the chemical (non stoichiometric phases, reactivity) and physical (electrical, magnetic and optical) properties that show inorganic solids (oxides, as well as metallic sulfides, hydrides, nitrides and carbides). The physical properties of these solids confer them a great industrial value so that the preparative methods and the most important instrumental techniques used to characterize them will be also described. The acquired knowledge in this topic will be applicable to the topic Materials Science, taugth in the seventh semester of the Chemistry Degree.
