The purpose of the course is to provide students with theoretical and empirical tools enabling them to develop a research project in labor economics. Students will become familiar with the theories and methods used by labor economists and will have the opportunity to apply them to topics of interest. The first part of the course is designed to provide a broad overview of theoretical models and empirical methods in the most traditional topics of labor economics. Topics to be covered include human capital investment, migration, discrimination in the labor market, household labor supply and fertility decisions. The second part of the course will focus on the functioning of markets and institutions in Less Developed Countries.
For each topic, theoretical contributions are proposed and compared to existing empirical evidence, in order to provide students interested in working on empirical analyses with a theoretical framework.

3. Discrimination in the Labor Market

Students will be required to present one of the papers during the course (20% of final grade) and to submit an empirical project at the end of the course (40% of final grade). The two assignments - the presentation and the empirical project - will account for 60% of the final grade. Grading scheme: Assigments 60%; Final Exam 40%.
The final grade in the second evaluation period is EXCLUSIVELY given by the grade obtained in a retake exam (with theory and practice questions) about the whole content of the course. Grades from continuous assessment, if any, will not be taken into account.
