Course context for academic year 2016-17

In this subject, students will become familiar with the fluid flow systems and the design and operation of machines to pump liquids and gases.
This course will provide the students basic skills to be used in other courses that make significant use of fluid mechanics as it will allow them to understand and address any practical fluid dynamics problem.

The students must have previous knowledge of mathematics and physics.

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE7 : Understand applied thermodynamics and the transmission of heat. Basic principles and their application to solving engineering problems.
  • CE8 : Understand the basic principles of fluid mechanics and their application to solving problems in the field of engineering. Calculation of piping, channels and fluid systems.

  • CPR10 : Knowledge, understanding and capacity to apply the necessary legislation when acting as an Industrial Engineer in a professional capacity.
  • CPR3 : Understand basic subjects and technologies to allow one to learn new methods and theories, making one versatile in adapting to new situations.
  • CPR4 : Capacity to solve problems with initiative, decision-making skills, creativity, critical reasoning and ability to communicate and transmit knowledge, skills and abilities in the field of industrial engineering.

The students should be able to understand the basic principles of fluid mechanics and apply them to:

  • The analysis of simple and complex flow systems by calculating the flow rates and pressures.
  • The design of flow systems which involves the following:

              - calculation of energy requirements

              - piping design

              - choosing equipment for measuring the pressure and flow rate

              - choosing pumping equipment for liquids and gases

  • Understand the fundamentals of and distinctions between some typical separation processes based on momentum transport, such as sedimentation and filtration.
