Competencies and objectives

Course context for academic year 2017-18

The course "Chemistry for Civil Engineering" is a subject named as "basic formation" that is tougth during the firts semester of the Civil Engineering Degree.

As every subject in the first semester there is no pre-requisite for this course.

The course is divided in three main activities. Theory lessons, group tutorship and laboratory practice. All the tasks proposed are focused to give the students a basic scietific-technical background, that would be useful and necessary for the success in the rest of the courses of the degree, since in this subject the student will get the tools necessary for the understanding of highly relevant issues in teh field of the Civil Engineering.

Course content (verified by ANECA in official undergraduate and Master’s degrees)

General Competences (CG)

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2017-18

At the end of the course every student should:
a) Know and be capable of using properly the basic terminology of chemistry.
b) Know, understand, and be able to use correctly the basic laws, concepts and scientific theories about the chemical behavior of the different substances
c) Know the most relevant chemical reactions in the field of the Civil Engineering, both from the point of view of the correct application of the construction materials, as from the point or view of the possible degradation of those materials.
d) the students should understand and learns the thermodynamic and kinetic basics that will condition the development of the different reactions related to the Civil Eng.
e) Know and understand how does the chemical composition affect the micro and macroscopic properties of the materials, and as a consequence the possible application of the materials.
f) Know and understand the possible mechanisms of air pollution, related with the Civil Engineering, and the different methods to minimize the environmental impact of any activity.
g) Every student should learn the chemical processes related with the water pollution, as well as the basics of the waste water treatment.
h) After passing the subject, the student should be capable of finding information, and analyzing it critically on his/her own.

i) Be able to organize a technical laboratory report, clearly written, and should be able to extract in a reasoned way the main conclusions from the obtained data.
j) After finishing the subject students should have improve their skills in group working, as well as for the public presentations of the works assigned to them.
k) The student should improve his/her skills for reading scientific texts in other languages, especially English language. This will allow them to increase the field from which he could obtain important information for his professional career.
l) Every student should learn how to manage his time to fulfill the tasks both individual and group, in time, according to the previously established deadlines.
