Course context for academic year 2017-18

English Pronunciation is a subject that addresses the phonological level of English language with a special focus on the English variant called Received Pronunciation (RP) or BBC English. Essential concepts of the segmental and suprasegmental aspects of PR are studied. Students are introduced to phonological transcription. This course offers basic training in learning of English sounds.

Specific Competences (CE)

  • CE1 : Be able to master the English language in practice and in theory.
  • CE26 : Be able to relate the different aspects of Philology with each other and with other disciplines.
  • CE7 : Be able to understand the phonetic-phonological component of English and apply said knowledge.

Specific objectives stated by the academic staff for academic year 2017-18

1. to acquire basic theoretical knowledge of the phonological component of the English language with a special focus on Received Pronunciation (RP) or BBC English variant.
2. to acquire basic practical knowledge of the phonological component of the English language with a special focus on Received Pronunciation (RP) or BBC English.
3. to learn how to interrelate the phonological component of the English language with other linguistic components such as morphosyntactic, lexico-semantic and pragmatic-discursive.
4. to learn the characteristic features of pronunciation and intonation of the English variant known as Received Pronunciation (RP) or BBC English.
5. to learn the basic symbols and phonological transcription rules.
6. to learn different varieties of English.
7. to learn how to use academic English as a communication tool in the classroom.
8. to be able to study and write clearly and accurately in academic English.
9. to learn how to read a text aloud or speak without errors of pronunciation marking the accentual rhythm of English and making proper use of its fundamental tonal patterns.
10. to be able to transcribe phonologically oral and written texts
11. to learn how to apply ICT to practical use of English pronunciation.
12. to learn how to plan and manage time by meeting the deadlines in the delivery of tasks.
13. to learn how to consult and manage bibliography in English.
