Una asignatura de Sedimentología está justificada plenamente ya que proporcionará los conocimientos necesarios para comprender las características, origen y dinámica de los fondos sedimentarios marinos que, además de su interés intrínseco, constituyen el sustrato de las poblaciones biológicas bentónicas y de un gran número de obras humanas (plataformas petrolíferas offshore, ingeniería marina, etc.).
Esta disciplina resulta fundamental para poder comprender y aprovechar adecuadamente asignaturas de cursos posteriores como Geología marina, Recursos marinos, Ingeniería costera y oceánica, ordenación del litoral y planctología y micropaleontología marina.

- CE23 : Know how to work on oceanographic campaigns and in the laboratory in a responsible and safe manner, encouraging teamwork.

- CE25 : Interpret, characterise and map marine and coastal communities.
