Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2015-16)

To give students a general overview of some of the many research interests in one of the latest linguistic perspectives: pragmatics, which aims at analysing how language is used within a context.

Contenidos teóricos y prácticos (2015-16)

II.- SYLLABUS. Lesson 1 Linguistic paradigms. The Structuralist paradigm. Introduction to Kuhn's term paradigm and its application to linguistics. General sketch of structuralism. Lesson 2 Linguistic paradigms. The Chomskyan paradigm. General sketch of Generative Grammar, the famous Chomskyan paradigm. Lesson 3 Pragmatics. General characteristics. A brief history of the pragmatic perspective. General characteristics. Lesson 4 The importance of context. Context is the key concept in pragmatics. This lesson is about its importance and the different types of context we can identify. Lesson 5 Grice. The cooperative principle. Brief analysis of Paul Grice's famous cooperative principle and its maxims. Lesson 6 Presupposition. Implicature. Two important terms in pragmatics. The latter is Gricean in origin, but has been reinterpreted within other pragmatic perspectives. Lesson 7 Relevance theory. Analysis of Sperber and Wilson's popular cognitive theory and its implications for pragmatic research. Lesson 8 Literal versus nonliteral language. Study of the different proposals suggesting where we can draw the line between literal and nonliteral language. Lesson 9 Speech acts. Review of one of the most popular theories in pragmatics, started by Austin and developed by Searle. Lesson 10 Irony. Analysis of one pragmatic strategy which most clearly shows how pragmatics is a necessary approach within linguistics. Lesson 11 Misunderstandings. Explanation of why people misunderstand each other in daily interactions or why the speaker's intended interpretation is not selected. Lesson 12 Nonverbal communication. Brief review of all the different nonverbal behaviours and their role in face-to-face interaction. Lesson 13 Oral versus written language. Study of how written texts can or cannot reproduce the oral connotations of spoken language. Lesson 14 Pragmatic grammar. Study of a brand new approach to grammar: a pragmatic one centred on use rather than on prescription. Lesson 15 Conversation analysis. Brief review of the well-known Birmingham-based schood of pragmatics. Lesson 16 Figurative language: metaphor. Pragmatic analysis of one of the most difficult issues within linguistics: figurative language in general, and metaphor in particular. Lesson 17 Politeness. Analysis of one of the most culture-specific notions within pragmatics. Lesson 18 Applications. Some possible applications of pragmatics: media discourses (films, comics, the press, Internet...), humor, and the analysis of literature, among others.
