Objetivos de las asignatura / competencias (2009-10)
AIMS
This course is designed to provide intensive and specific information in contrast to the more extensive and general approach taken in the First and Second Year literature courses. The contents here are also more culture-specific, because of the great importance of the socio-political context of Irish literature in English. The particular aims are as follows:
1. To introduce students to the peculiar historical, geographical, cultural, linguistic, political, economic and religious circumstances that have shaped the Irish nation.
2. To place Irish literature in English in its specific context and underline the characteristics that have helped to fashion the character of Irish writing.
3. To provide pointers to the peculiarly Irish contribution to literature in English and to stress the impact made by the work of such writers as Swift, Sheridan, Maria Edgeworth, Wilde, Shaw, Yeats, Lady Gregory, Synge, Joyce, O´Casey, Beckett, Flann O´Brien and a number of more recent poets, novelists and dramatists.
4. To explore the ethnic, political, lingusitic, cultural and religious ramifications of Irishness as it appears in some seminal texts, in order to allow students to move tentatively towards definitions of Irish literary identity.
5. To sharpen students´ critical awareness and increase the sophistication of their approach to literature by encouraging close reading.
6. To encourage students to analyse the selected fragments and books with a more precise awareness of the peculiarities of the historical and cultural context out of which they emerged.
7. To promote discussion of the various literary representations of the Irish context.

Clases teóricas y prácticas
METHODOLOGY
Distribution of the teaching load is based on the assumption that there will be fifteen clear teaching weeks in the semester, with four contact hours per week (three in the classroom and one in the lecturer`s office).

Theoretical lessons (Group meetings)
The lecture format will be used for introducing topics, especially when the information content is high (social, political and institutional characteristics of Irish culture, the historical overview of the relations between Ireland and Britain, the colonial experience, relevant linguistic peculiarities, the various social, religious and political groupings, the emergence of a distinctly Irish literature in English, the problems and confusions such distinctions give rise to, etc.) Fragments and other photocopied texts will be then used as a starting point for analysis. In the discussion of fragments, texts and set books, a more open type of teaching is envisaged, with the emphasis on student participation and group work centred on specific tasks. The three set books will be dealt with in the order indicated in "Contenidos teóricos y prácticos", but cross-reference and continual comparison and contrast will be actively encouraged.

Practical part (Tutorials)
In the period indicated in "Assessment" the students will have to deliver a talk of about fiteen minutes on a specific topic relevant to Irish literature in English, studied through analysis of a specific text or texts.
Preparation of the talk will include three stages, corresponding with at least three compulsory tutorials in the lecturer`s office, the first one taking place in September, the second one in October and the third one in November:
i) Selection of literary text or texts.
ii) Definition of specific topic to be studied.
iii) Submission of diagram of talk to lecturer for approval.

Instrumentos y criterios de evaluación (2009-10)
Examen final
ASSESSMENT
Theoretical part
There will be one written examination in January covering the material studied during the term. The exam will be written in English, and linguistic mistakes will bring the mark down. The exam will consist of five parts:
a) A multiple-choice test on the issues studied (20% of final mark)
b) Identification and contextualization of fragments from photocopied texts and from The Aran Islands and the chosen set novel (5% of final mark)
c) On question on issues studied (10% of final mark)
d ) Two questions on one fragment of The Aran Islands (20% of final mark)
e) An extended commentary on a specific topic corresponding to the chosen set novel (20% of final mark)
In part d) i.e., the extended commentary, the following parameters will be taken into account:
a) organization of ideas; b) clarity of exposition; c) insight of analysis; d) originality of ideas; e) illustration and comparison with other relevant cases; f) relevance of information; and g) stylistical quality.
Practical part
The oral exams will take place between 21st and 31st January. At the beginning of January the lecturer will issue a list indicating the time and date for each student.
Before beginning the exam, the student will give a copy of the abstract to the lecturer and will then deliver the talk in English for about fifteen minutes. The student will be able to consult notes, but no texts can be read in the exam.
In the assessment the following factors will be taken into account: a) oral expression; b) clarity of exposition; c) organization of ideas; d) originality of ideas; e) insight of analysis; f) relevance of information; and g) relevant illustration and comparison.
Plagiarism in this exam, no matter to what extent, will be a cause for the student to fail the subject.
The three tutorials in the lecturer`s office, as indicated in "Metodologia docente", the first one in September, the second one in October and the third one in November, are obligatory for all students and A NECESSARY CONDITION FOR TAKING THE ORAL EXAM.

Pass standard and final mark
The pass mark is 5`0

Written exam: 75% of final mark
Oral exam: 25% of final mark
